Demonstration 19th January: International Day of Solidarity against Fascism and Racism in Greece

Date:

On 19th January across Ireland and across the world, anti-fascists will be out in solidarity with Greek anti-fascists as part of a "call for international solidarity with participation in Athens demonstration on 19th of January and antifascist action around the world outside Greek embassies" called by a coalition of anti-fascist and anti-racist groups, immigrant groups, trade unions, students' unions and pupils, intellectuals and artists. The callout enourages the people to "occupy the city [Athens] with music, chants and speeches, to shout that the Nazis are not welcome, that the coalition government’s racist policies of concentration camps, FRONTEX and of the denial of citizenship to the children of immigrants, enrage us as much as the barbaric measures that send hundreds of thousands to unemployment."

Anti-fascist actions will take place across the world in several major cities including as London, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dublin, Leeds, Bristol, Barcelona, Derry, Cork,  Ossona, Manresa, La Garriga, Bilbao, Lyon, Copenhagen, Vienna, Tampere, Warsaw, Moscow, Chicago, New York, Sydney, Montreal and Ljubljana, amongst others.

The organisers of the demo in Dublin have released a press statement calling for Dublin anti-fascists to assemble at Stephen's Green (shopping centre entrance) and march on the Greek embassy at 2pm on Saturday 19th January.

Saturday 19th January marks the International Day of Solidarity against Fascism and Racism in Greece, organised to coincide with a massive demonstration in Athens against the dramatic rise of the openly fascist party Golden Dawn.
Following an appeal for international solidarity from numerous civil-society groups in Greece, a
coordinated demonstration has been called in Dublin by Anti-Fascist Action, the Anti-Racism Network and There will be a procession assembling at St Stephen’s Green (shopping centre entrance) at 2pm with the intention of marching to the Greek Embassy via the European Union building. A rally will then take place outside the Greek Embassy from 2.30pm. This will involve speakers including those from the Greek community in Ireland.

It goes on to say:

The rise of the openly Nazi Golden Dawn party in Greece, which now stands at 14% in the polls and practices violence against migrants, has sent shockwaves across the continent. Since Golden Dawn’s foundation in the early 1990s, they have pursued an openly racist, sexist, homophobic and extremist right-wing agenda, often resorting to violence and physical attacks. The catastrophic effects of the economic downturn in recent years has provided Golden Dawn with a fresh recruiting ground for those who wish to find easy scapegoats to blame for the current situation. Having previously held no seats in the Greek parliament their profile and reach has increased so much so that they won 18 seats in the last election. Nils Muiznieks, human rights commissioner for the Council of Europe, has called Golden Dawn the "most overtly extremist and Nazi party in Europe."

Luke Bukha (Anti-Racism Network Ireland) states, “Any gains made by fascists and racists in Greece are also gains made by fascists and racists elsewhere. In standing in solidarity with the people of Greece we recognise that the current economic crisis is breeding racism which must be countered before similar fascist ideologies take root in Ireland.

A similar event will be taking place in Derry at the Walled City Market, Guildhall Square, Derry at 2pm.

Solidarity Books are calling on all groups, organisations and individuals to join us in Cork this Saturday to show we stand with all those challenging the rising tide of racism and fascism in Greece and elsewhere with a demo and stall at Daunt Sq., Patrick St. at 3pm.

Everyone is welcome back to Solidarity Books afterwards for food, a chat and short films about the situation in Greece.

The WSM is calling all those who oppose fascism and racism to attend their local events and show solidarity with Greek anti-fascists.
