Film Night: Debtocracy, Wednesday, August 24, 8pm @solidaritybooks

Date:

For the first time in Greece a documentary produced by the audience. Debtocracy seeks the causes of the debt crisis and proposes solutions, hidden by the government and the dominant media.

Debtocracy is a 2011 documentary film by Katerina Kitidi and Aris Hatzistefanou. The documentary mainly focuses on two points: the causes of the Greek debt crisis in 2010 and possible future solutions that could be given to the problem that are... not currently being considered by the government of the country. Made for just £7,000, this compelling film about Greek's financial crisis makes the case that the entire euro system was rotten from the start.

The filmmakers bypassed traditional channels of distribution (partly because these were inaccessible to them) and Debtocracy was released in April 2011, posted on the web for free viewing or downloading, and has since been viewed over a million times online, with local groups and campaigns also setting up screenings all over Europe and beyond. The film's analysis encompasses far more than the particulars of the Greek situation, and is an invaluable resource for anyone seeking to understand the current crisis of capitalism.
