The nurses’ work-to-rule and their threat to escalate the action next week has been met with an outraged onslaught by Mary Harney and Bertie Ahern. The sight of a group of workers standing up and demanding their rights has become so unusual that it seems as if the government cannot believe the temerity of the nurses in doing just that.

Końcem 2005 roku dwa promy należące do Irish Ferries zostały okupowane przez załogę broniąca się w ten sposób przez wkroczeniem ochrony która miała za zadanie zastąpić ich pracowników innymi. W piątek w rożnych miastach Irlandii ponad 100 tysięcy osób opuściło swe stanowiska pracy przystępując do marszu solidarnościowego z uczestnikami okupacji. Ugoda z firma została osiągnięta ,związki obwieściły zwycięstwo ale czy ta ugoda to prawdziwe zwycięstwo?

Pracownicy Irish Ferries pokazali jak można oprzeć się atakom ze strony pracodawcy. Odpowiedź pracowników na próby bycia zastraszanym przez kadrę kierownicza i wynajętych przez nich oprychów, była natychmiastowa i bezpośrednia. Nie czekali z założonymi rękami tylko podjęli natychmiastową akcje bezpośrednią w obronie swych żrodel utrzymania i sprowadzając pracodawców do defensywy. To ta akcja przyczyniła się do nagłośnienia problemu aż po państwowe agendy polityczne i zmusiła liderów związkowych do poważnego zajęcia się ta sprawą.

 Ostatni byliśmy świadkami walecznych zmagań emigranckich pracowników o równe płace i warunki pracy takie same jak ich irlandzkich kolegów. 900 tureckich pracowników i 300 irlandzkich zostało zatrudnionych przez firmę budowlana GAMA. Zgodnie z umowa o zarejestrowanym zatrudnieniu, żaden z pracowników budowlanych który pracuje legalnie, nie może być zatrudniany za mniej niż 12.96 eu za godzinę, jednak GAMA płaciła swym tureckim pracownikom zaledwie 2.20 za godzinę.

Last September saw a split in the USA’s Congress of Trade Unions, the AFL-CIO. The Change to Win Federation held its founding convention in St. Louis, Missouri, where they set out their plans: cut down on bureaucracy, devote a lot more resources to organising the unorganised, and start building industry-wide super-unions.

In the UK union membership has been in steady decline for the past 25 years, not least due to how people are being employed - casualised labour, increased imposition of agency work, temporary, short term contracts & contracts of ‘self-employment’, along with the general lack of confidence in unions after years of complacency, compromises and defeats.

Over the past year there has been an emerging preoccupation among anarchists and socialists with precarity as it’s an expression of a new work discipline imposed by neo-liberalism. Already there have been several precarity forums in European cities aimed at etching out a sense of the identities formed through the shared experience of the demands of job market flexibility.

The Independent Workers Union (IWU) is a new small Irish trade union which stands outside the partnership consensus and is attempting to build a radical trade union.

SIPTU estimates that almost a third of workers in UCD are ‘fixed term workers’. The university also made a number of them redundant over the summer, including one who had been working for the college since 1981.
